Roll-out sod vs. grass seed on the North Aegean coast: installation & irrigation guide
How to prepare the soil, design pop-up irrigation and establish a lush roll-out lawn in Ayvalık, Cunda, Sarımsaklı, Altınova and Gömeç gardens.
One of the first questions homeowners ask when landscaping in Ayvalık, Cunda, Sarımsaklı, Altınova and Gömeç is: Should I lay ready roll-out sod or sow grass from seed? Given the long, dry North Aegean summers and brisk coastal winds, choosing the right method and preparing the root zone properly determines whether your lawn stays dense and green for years.
Based on our field work across landscape design and build projects in Ayvalık and the Gulf of Edremit, here is a practical step-by-step guide.
Roll-out sod vs. grass seed
Both methods have their place, but in coastal villa and summer-home gardens the differences are clear:
- Ready roll-out sod: Grown for 12–14 months on specialist turf farms, weed-free and with a dense, knitted root mat. It gives an instant green garden on day one, roots into the soil within 10–14 days, and is ready for foot traffic shortly after. On sandy plots in Sarımsaklı and Altınova—or open gardens where birds and ants carry off loose seed—roll-out sod is by far the most reliable option.
- Sowing from seed: Material cost is lower upfront, but the seedbed must never dry out during the 4–6 week germination window, and dormant weed seeds in the soil will sprout alongside the grass. It suits very large plots where daily supervision in spring or autumn is possible.
Best season to lay sod in Ayvalık
Certified roll-out sod can be installed 10 to 11 months of the year, excluding hard frost days. The most forgiving windows are:
- Spring (March–May): Soil temperatures rise, roots drive deep quickly, and the turf knits completely before summer heat arrives.
- Autumn (September–November): Summer heat has eased, the soil is still warm, and autumn rains assist establishment.
- Summer (June–August): Ideal for homeowners moving into a summer villa, provided an automatic pop-up sprinkler system is installed beforehand and watered consistently morning and evening during the first fortnight.
Step-by-step soil preparation and installation
A lawn is only as good as the top 15 cm of soil beneath it. Whether working on rocky Cunda plots or free-draining sandy ground in Sarımsaklı, we follow five strict steps:
- Clearing and rough grading: Existing weeds and construction debris are removed, and a gentle 1–2% slope is graded away from house walls to prevent standing water.
- Root-zone amendment: Heavy clay is opened up with pumice stone and screened topsoil; sandy soil is enriched with moisture-retaining potting soil and peat blended with worm castings or screened composted goat manure.
- Automatic irrigation layout: Pop-up sprinkler lines are installed and pressure-tested for head-to-head coverage before a single roll of turf is laid.
- Fine levelling and rolling: The bed is raked smooth and firmed with a lawn roller so footprints sink no more than 1 cm.
- Staggered brickwork laying: Sod rolls are laid in a staggered bond with tight seams, trimmed cleanly around trees and paths, rolled again to eliminate air pockets, and watered immediately.
Watering, mowing and low-water alternatives
Water early in the morning (05:30–07:00) rather than under midday sun, and keep blade height at 5–6 cm during summer to shade the root crown. Where mowing or irrigation is impractical—such as steep banks or dry stone walls—combine basalt stepping stones with drought-proof groundcovers like heartleaf ice plant, Hottentot fig and gazania.
