GARDEN GUIDE
Choosing hedge & privacy plants: Leylandii, lemon cypress, euonymus and photinia
Comparing the best evergreen hedge plants for privacy, windbreaks and coastal resilience in Ayvalık and North Aegean gardens, with spacing and pruning advice.
For villa boundaries, summer-home terraces and residential estates in Ayvalık and the Gulf of Edremit, an evergreen living hedge provides both year-round privacy and a natural windbreak against the prevailing north-easterly breeze. Choosing the right species for your sun exposure, soil depth and distance from the sea—and spacing the plants properly—prevents bare lower stems and overcrowding later on.
Here is how we match hedge species across our landscape design and planting projects.
1. Fast-growing conifers for tall privacy screens
- Leyland Cypress (Leylandii): Growing 60–100 cm per year, Leylandii forms a dense green wall faster than almost any other conifer. It tolerates wind, winter cold and regular shearing, making it ideal for large perimeter boundaries.
- Lemon Cypress: Prized for its bright golden-chartreuse foliage and fresh lemon scent when brushed. It thrives in full sun and also works well in large terrace planters.
- Arborvitae (Thuja): Naturally upright and compact, ideal where narrow side passages call for a tidy screen without taking up wide bed space.
2. Broadleaf evergreens for coastal and salt-wind gardens
Along the Cunda, Sarımsaklı and Altınova shoreline, glossy-leaved shrubs handle salt spray and dry winds exceptionally well:
- Japanese Spindle (Euonymus) and Gold Euonymus: Tough, salt-tolerant and adaptable to both full sun and partial shade. For formal entrances, Pyramid Japanese Spindle offers a natural cone silhouette.
- Photinia (‘Red Robin’): Produces vivid crimson new shoots in spring and after every trim, adding striking colour contrast along stone or rendered walls.
- Bay Laurel: Native to the Aegean coast, deeply drought-tolerant once established, aromatic and easily clipped into crisp formal hedges.
- Japanese Pittosporum and Ball Boxwood: Excellent for low parterres, front paths and architectural edging between 50 cm and 120 cm high.
Recommended planting spacing
Planting too closely causes root competition and shaded bare patches; planting too far apart delays screening:
- Leyland Cypress & Lemon Cypress (150–200 cm tall stock): Space 70–90 cm apart on centre.
- Photinia & Bay Laurel: Space 60–80 cm apart.
- Euonymus hedges: Space 40–50 cm apart (2 to 2.5 plants per linear metre).
- Low edging (Dwarf Euonymus, Boxwood, Lavender): Space 30–35 cm apart.
Digging a continuous 40–50 cm wide planting trench enriched with potting soil and peat and composted goat manure, followed by a dual-line drip irrigation pipe along the root zone, ensures uniform growth along the entire hedge.
